Holiday Platters & Treasured Family Heirloom China - (Cranberry Sauce and Antique Transferware Do Not Mix Well.) It's that time again. Time for wonderful home cooked holiday dinners. Time for making rich memories filled with family and friends. Time to pull out your beautiful heirloom china - treasured china possibly handed down from your mother, grandmother, or even great grandmother. But, are you sure you want to actually use your treasured china for serving your holiday dinner? Just keep in mind - can it be replaced? If so, use it and enjoy it. If that grand turkey platter or rare soup tureen can't be replaced, maybe you don't want to actually use it. Maybe the best tribute to your ancestors would be to put it on display in a prominent place and keep it safe for future generations! You might think "Grandmother used it and I should use it also." Well, maybe Grandmother was secretly relieved when the meal was over and her treasured platter was safely put away! If you do choose to use antique china, just give it a little extra care. Treat it as you would anything over a hundred years old. Protect it from drastic temperature changes. Hand wash, but don't let it sit in liquid because most old china will have at least some crackle to the glaze that makes it more porous - remember the cranberry stains. Also, never scrub china with gold trim or any handpainted areas. Usually the handpainted areas are more susceptible to wear because they were applied on top of the glaze after the china was fired. Yes, fresh crushed cranberries will leave lovely pink stains on that treasured antique blue and white transferware platter. I know from experience! |
